Tram Nation Traxx Stars: The Daz Bailey Interview

British DJ Producer Daz Bailey has received global attention for his original tunes and house remixes, which have gained enormous airplay on BBC Radio 1 in the UK.  In 2009, Bailey & Tristan D created a spellbinding Euro-house remix of The Street’s Blinded By The Lights that generated acclaim during the summer party festivities at Ibiza in Spain and significant radio play. For more than 15 years, this multi-talented artist has perfected his craft by emulating some of the brightest stars in the electronic dance scene - Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and Sasha. Daz boarded his flight on SkyTram Express to chat about his big break in the music business, his upcoming releases and favorite local hotspots.

Hometown: (Nantwich, Cheshire, UK)

Could you share with us how you got your start as a DJ/Producer in the UK? My love for dance music started back in 1991. I used to go to a club called Legends in a town called Warrington-Cheshire – it was a great underground club that played Italian house. After visiting various clubs for the next couple of years in the legendry Hacienda in Manchester, where I got to see dj's like Sasha, John Digweed & Dave Seamen, I realized that DJing was for me. So in 1993, I bought my first set of decks; the rest is history.

As for producing, that came much later; in fact 14 years later in 2007. I came up with the idea to do a new version of the classic Yazoo track Don’t Go, so I approached my best friend Scott Rosser (DarioG, Cahill). At that time I didn't have a clue where to start. it was just ideas, but Scott is an amazing producer, so it became the perfect combination.

Within two days of finishing the track, Judge Jules played it on Radio1, then continued for the next six weeks, which put us on the map.

I'd started learning how to produce at the start of 2008, but in the summer, after us doing a couple of remixes including The Freemasons-(uninvited), which we became the first people to be personally asked us to remix one of their tracks, Scott made the sensible decision to go full time with his Cahill project with 3beat guys, Tim Condran & Anton Powers.

Which left me to make a decision. I had to go it alone, so I had my first solo track ready by Oct 2008, which got big props from Judge Jules, now a year on, I have a list of tracks & remixes, which is still growing monthly.

Who are some of your favorite artists and/or techno outfits who had a major impact your career? From Sasha to Ferry Corsten & Tiesto.

One of your outstanding collaborations was on the remix of By Your Side by Denmark’s own Miro. Describe the creative process behind this massive rework. I signed this track to my new label DigiTraxx, which is run by me & Scott. It has always been a favourite of mine from back in 1999. I'd had email sent to say it was available for licensing.  I jumped at the chance.

I suppose one my inspirations for this mix was Deamau5. I loved his warm synth sounds. I thought it would be perfect for this soft vocal. I just add a bit more trance elements in my remixes, but I like to keep it warm sounding. A blend of house & trance-“Trouse.”

What was their reaction to your mix? They loved it.

Another mega success was your unofficial house mix of Yazoo’s Don’t Go in 2007. What did Vince Clarke think of your white label mix? It was Alison Moyet who gave her approval, but it was at a time when they got back together & getting hold of Vince Clarke became a very hard task.

When you record a remix, do you have an ultimate goal of getting an official release by a record label? Most remixes I do are for official release anyway, but if I do a classic remake it is for my dj sets, but with the hope it will get released, if not then no problem.

Has the Street’s Mike Skinner had a chance to listen to your mix? If so, what was his general reaction? At this time, Mike Skinner is being approached, so thats all I can say at the moment.

The Streets-Blinded by the lights (Tristan D & Daz Bailey remix) by Daz Bailey

Blinded by The Lights was originally recorded in 2004 from The Street’s A Grand Don’t Come Free LP. Earlier this year Nero came out with his dubstep version and now your trance version is building acclaim in clubs around the UK and in Europe. Why do you think this track has become an ideal tune to remix in various genres? Actually this has only one remix, the Nero version. It was Tristan who wanted to do something with this. As soon as he said it, I got something together within an hour, it all fell into place, obviously not the finished track.

What are some original tunes and/or remix projects that you have currently in development? I'm currently doing a remix a week. I've just completed Kaskade & Deadmau5 – Move For Me, which is getting support worldwide already. My new track Higher State, which features vocalist Jodie Conor, is just about to be released. At this very moment I'm working on the euro smash Remady P&R-No Superstar (Daz Bailey Remix), then straight on to a new collaboration with Judge Jules, Tristan D & Jules wife, Amanda.

Best remix you have heard this year? I'm really liking the Tiesto remix of Bloc Party –One More Chance, at the moment.

Your favorite record released this year? John O'Callaghan ft Sarah Howells-Find Yourself, is big fave of mine, up to now.

What are three up-and-coming artists who electronic dance music fans should be listening to this year? The three mains guys who I think deserve to be up there with the best are, Nathan C, Ben Preston & Christian Davies. They are brilliant at whatever they touch.

If I were traveling to the UK, where should I go for the following:

Favorite Local Club: Ministry of Sound

Favorite Record Shop: a thing of the past, it’s all about download now, which is sad. I use Trackitdown & Beatport mainly.

Favorite Bar: I've not Favorite bar, especially where I live.
